Acoustic Control

WaveformWhat might be classed as music to some, may not be for others. Maybe you have issues with loud neighbours, or maybe you live close to a building site. For whatever reason, acoustic control might be your only way of limiting the amount of noise in and around your building.

There are countless ways to dampen down either airborne or vibration noise, some cheap, some not so cheap, and all dependent on your building, it's character and your budget. Before you can solve a problem like acoustic noise, you might need some help picking out where the noise is originating, how it is being radiated throughout the building and the solutions available to dampen the issue.

We can offer consultation on various methods of noise control, offer expert advice on solutions, and get you in touch with the people who can solve your problems.

Airborne Noise

Airborne noise can be caused by talking, music, anything really. It starts with the object or person making the noise, exciting the air around where the noise originates and travels through the air by means of vibrating air molecules.

This is the easier of the two to stop, and normally works by inserting something in the way of the noise. Different products have different effects on the noise, but they all follow the same principles. Dense objects work by stopping the air noise being able to conduct it's energy into the dense object. The denser the object the harder to agitate it's molecules. objects that have a springy property to them offer the other means of stopping the energy being conducted onto them. By have an consistency that is springy they counteract the force being applied onto them. Quite simple put you can either be rigid refusing to move, or be supple counteracting the force.

Impact Noise

This is the harder of the two to dampen, due to the noise being passed on as radiant energy, noise is passed on through vibrations in the buildings structure. Impact noise can be generated by vibrations in the buildings footing, through neighbouring buildings and sites, as well as through conversion of energy, like when a nightclub has low frequencies being projected and soaked up into the buildings structure.

The only true way to prevent impact noise being transmitted throughout a building is to disconnect the affected area from the build. The best way to achieve this is to create a floating surface that sits on a springy support, preventing the vibrations being transmitted into the new surface.

Walls, Ceilings and Floors

Both types of noise can be dampened using solutions derived for walls, ceilings and floors. Take a look through the various methods for an insight into how to dampen acoustic noise.
